What happened to Agent Coulson?

Unknown. We see him get stabbed and medics are called to assist him. He indicates he thinks he’s dying, and it will give the Avengers something to avenge. Nick Fury makes it appear that he was carrying the Captain America trading cards when he was injured/killed, but this is a trick used by Fury to get a stronger reaction from the Avengers. If Fury is willing to use deceit to motivate the group, he may be lying about Coulson. We don’t see anyone examine Coulson or declare him dead, only Fury says he is, and we never see any further proof of this (i.e. a body), so it is entirely possible that Coulson was injured but not killed or was a S.H.I.E.L.D. Life Model Decoy android (referenced by Tony Stark in jest earlier in the movie). The character of Coulson is currently still alive in other Marvel media.
